Commerce — The City of Commerce on Tuesday approved a resolution authorizing the purchase of a 2025 lay‑down (Levoy) machine from Kirby Smith Machinery Inc. for an amount not to exceed $220,000, paid from the city’s street maintenance fund.
City staff told council the machine is a used 2025 model with roughly 300 hours and is similar to the city’s older unit, making it easier for crews to operate. “We're buying this from use for $220,000, with about a $30,000 discount from the vendor,” said Howdy, a city staff member who presented the item. Staff said the city can pay cash for the purchase and still maintain funding for street projects and materials.
Timothy Jones, the city’s public works director, was not present; staff noted Jones was participating in a voluntary youth program with his children. Council members asked about warranty and training; staff said the vendor provides both. Council member (mover) and a second carried the motion; the council voted to approve the purchase.
The purchase follows the city’s stated effort to build internal capacity for recurring street maintenance rather than relying on aging equipment, staff said. There was no public opposition recorded during discussion.
The council approved the procurement by motion and vote; staff will proceed with vendor documentation and delivery arrangements.
