Board approves revised device protection plan; parents must enroll by Sept. 30 or pay full repair costs

The Grandville Board of Education approved revisions to the district’s Technology Protection Plan (TPP), including a proposed annual fee of about $30 and a cut-off date for purchases. Walter, who presented the revision, said the district implemented 1:1 devices in 2013 and has not raised the plan fee previously; peer districts generally charge near $30.
Walter explained the change would require parents to purchase TPP coverage by Sept. 30; families choosing not to enroll by that date could not purchase protection afterward and would be responsible for full repair costs. "This past school year, we implemented more of an online payment system for that technology protection plan and that process caused us to go back and look at costs for repair of devices," Walter said.
Walter gave a district context: the TPP is offered to students in grades 5–12, roughly 3,000 students districtwide, and about 600 students currently elect the protection plan. He did not have exact historical failure counts at the meeting but offered to provide them on request. After questions about incidence and revenue, the board voted to approve the revised plan as presented.
