During the public-comment period on June 16 resident Greg Vierling asked the Shakopee City Council to fly both the new state flag and the older flag, saying he and his family have custodial land containing Dakota burial mounds and that his family has long-standing ties with Dakota people dating to 1877.
Vierling said he had spoken with Dakota acquaintances who dislike the new state flag and said flying both flags would undercut what he described as the new flag's divisive symbolism and demonstrate the city’s inclusiveness. He asked the council to share his remarks with councilors via the clerk. No council action was taken during public comment.
