Oscoda County honors deputies and first responders for river rescue

Oscoda County commissioners on Oct. 22 honored several deputies and community responders for a rescue on Aug. 1 in which a 17-year-old struggling in the AuSable River near the Mio Hydro Dam was brought to safety.
Sheriff Grace and the board presented awards to Deputy Ryan Blair (Lifesaving Award; Distinguished Service Award), Corey Newton (Distinguished Service Award), Cameron Thurston (Distinguished Service Award) and Cody Wilson (Citizens Award of Valor). According to the account presented at the meeting, deputies arrived within minutes, Deputy Blair entered the water with assistance from a bystander and two Tri-Town firefighters, and the youth and deputy were transported to a hospital and later released.
The board thanked the Tri-Town Fire Department, Oscoda County EMS and the Mio resident who assisted. Chair Charles Varner and commissioners commended the quick actions that likely prevented a fatality.
