Commissioner Jackie Bondar informed the Oscoda County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 10 that she is rescinding her Nov. 26 "Yes" vote on the proposed 2025 budget and intends to vote "No," saying she found "a lot of discrepancies and questions that have never been answered" during her review.
Chair Charles E. Varner said rescinding the prior vote reduces the earlier tally and noted the board will hold a motion to adopt the 2025 proposed budget at its Dec. 17 meeting. Varner asked whether Bondar could meet with county staff—specifically Michelle Knepp, county administrator, and Rene Welser—to review her concerns; Bondar confirmed she had already discussed some errors with Knepp and said the timeframe given to review the proposed budget was insufficient.
Separately during the same meeting, the board moved to approve the 2025 proposed General Fund budget in the amount of $6,913,184.09 and associated Special Funds as presented and scheduled a public hearing and adoption at the Dec. 17, 2024 meeting; the motion passed on roll call. The board’s action to approve the proposed budget documents and schedule a hearing does not finalize budget adoption. Bondar’s stated objections and the offer by the chair to facilitate a staff review set the stage for further consideration at the Dec. 17 meeting.
The board did not change the proposed budget total at this meeting; commissioners may raise additional clarifying questions before the adoption vote at the scheduled public hearing.
