Commissioners proclaim EMS week, motorcycle‑safety and safe‑boating observances; approve several board appointments

The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners used part of its meeting to read and sign proclamations recognizing Emergency Medical Services Week (May 18–24, 2025), Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month (May 2025) and National Safe Boating Week (May 17–23, 2025).
Public Safety Director Dave McDowell thanked EMS providers and described the county’s volunteer and career system as exemplary. "Our EMS providers in this county are exceptional," McDowell said, and several chiefs, clinicians and volunteers were invited forward for photos and recognition.
Howard Cantor of ABATE of Maryland addressed commissioners during the motorcycle-safety proclamation, urging driver education and awareness of motorcycles on roadways. Coast Guard Auxiliary and local boating-safety volunteers promoted upcoming boater-safety courses and outreach during the safe‑boating proclamation.
On appointments, staff reported multiple vacancies and recommended reappointments and new appointments to the Commission for Women, the Calvert County Marine Museum Board of Governors, the Cove Point Light Station Commission and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. The board approved the recommended appointments and reappointments by roll call.
The board also approved the consent agenda, with Commissioner Hart recusing from two items, and heard several commissioner reports on ribbon cuttings, youth competitions and community fundraising.
What's next: Appointees will fill the noted vacancies; commissioners will conduct outreach during Business Appreciation Week and observe Memorial Day ceremonies as announced in the meeting.
