Appling County board re-signs 2024 millage rates for county, school and fire levies

APPLING COUNTY, Ga. — The Appling County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 17 re-signed and approved the county's 2024 tax levy resolutions, reaffirming rates for county operations, the school system and fire and rescue services.
Chairman Leslie Burch opened the called meeting at the Courthouse Annex and the board moved, seconded and unanimously approved the County Maintenance millage at 11.924 mills, which the packet lists as yielding a total levy of $15,056,408. The board likewise re-signed the Countywide School Maintenance millage at 12.243 mills (total levy $15,497,681) and a Fire & Rescue tax of 0.47 mills (total levy $593,468). Commissioner Theodore Wilkerson moved to approve the county maintenance resolution; the motion was seconded by Commissioner Doug Harris and approved without objection.
The re-signings were required after staff determined earlier public-notice publication dates were incorrect and the notices needed to be republished and the posting period restarted. County Manager Al Meadows told the board the additional publication time was necessary so the department of audits would accept the timeline for millage-setting.
Why this matters: The millage rates determine property-tax bills for residents and local governments. The board's action preserves the tax rate decisions already discussed while meeting statutory notice requirements.
What the board approved: The three separate resolutions were each approved by motions and recorded as unanimous votes. County officials said the republishing was procedural and the rates themselves reflect the board’s previously considered levies.
The board adjourned after handling the millage resolutions and several other agenda items; County Clerk Robyn Evans signed the meeting minutes.
