Appling County commissioners approve vice chair appointment, honor late judge and hire athletic coordinator

Appling County commissioners took several routine governance actions during meetings on Feb. 7 and the Feb. 13 called session.
At the Feb. 7 regular meeting the board approved minutes for the Jan. 10 and Jan. 24 meetings (with a clarification to the Jan. 10 minutes). The board unanimously approved a resolution honoring the late Judge Diane Hallman. Wm. Terry Turner read the resolution, and it was presented to the judge’s children; Holly Hallman was present to accept the document.
Commissioner Charlie Leggett was appointed vice chairman for 2023 on a motion by Commissioner Randy Sellers, seconded by Commissioner Doug Harris; the motion passed unanimously.
The board reviewed the FY2021 audit presented by Kale Harris of Harris & Co., who said the county is in good financial standing. The recreation director reported the Aquatic Center’s grand opening had strong attendance and described program hours and fees; a structural engineer recommended modest concrete and paint repairs to the Max Deen Pool that will require draining and cleaning before work begins.
During the Feb. 13 called meeting the board entered executive session to discuss personnel and, upon returning to open session, approved hiring Michael Lynn as athletic coordinator at an annual salary of $53,560 on a motion by Commissioner Leggett, seconded by Commissioner Harris. The motion passed unanimously.
There were no contested votes recorded in the minutes provided and the meetings adjourned with routine closing remarks from the chairman.
