Dodge County closes select rural dumpster sites and extends landfill transfer hours to reduce illegal dumping

Dodge County commissioners approved a reorganization of rural sanitation services this year that closed multiple unmanned dumpster sites and extended hours at the county transfer station to provide supervised disposal and curb illegal dumping.
County Manager Spencer Barron and Road Supervisor Richard Harrell told the Board that certain remote dumpster sites were regularly used for illegal dumping, increased maintenance costs and created safety concerns. After studying usage and costs, the manager recommended closing five sites (including Parkerson Church Road at Golf Cart World, S.C. Cadwell Road, Suomi, Wahl to Wahl, and James Troup Road) and expanding hours at the landfill transfer station to 7 a.m.–7 p.m. on weekdays with added Sunday afternoon hours in peak months.
The Board approved the closures, authorized public notices and asked staff to hire two to three part‑time employees (at about $10/hour) to manage the transfer station and supervise the new hours. County staff said the changes had already reduced expenses and expected the supervised transfer station to improve recycling and reduce illegal dumping.
What happens next: The county will publish a two‑week notice in local media and on social channels before the site closures take effect. Staff will monitor volumes, enforcement needs and consider future reopenings if demand and funding permit.
