Appling County commissioners unanimously approve leases, contracts and an ordinance; personnel action confirmed

At its July 9 meeting the Appling County Board of Commissioners approved multiple lease and contract renewals, awarded a janitorial contract, adopted an updated timber-harvesting ordinance, confirmed hospital authority nominations and approved a personnel salary increase; most votes were unanimous.
The Appling County Board of Commissioners on July 9 approved a series of routine and administrative items during its regular meeting, acting unanimously on lease renewals, contract awards, appointments and an ordinance.
Among the motions the board took: it renewed the Natural Resources Conservation Service lease for office space in the Oak Street complex; approved renewal of the DFCS building lease at the current annual rate of $49,000; and accepted the Brunswick Judicial Circuit Public Defender indigent services contract for FY 2024–25 at Appling County’s share of $156,650.59. Commissioner Daryl Edwards moved several routine contract and lease approvals and Commissioner Charlie Leggett seconded multiple motions; votes on these motions were recorded as unanimous.
The board awarded a six-month janitorial contract for the DFCS building to Grasshopper Pro Services (contract period ending Dec. 31, 2024) as the lowest bidder. The board also received three bids to replace the Appling Heritage Center roof; the lowest bid was $21,850 from DBM Construction and funds exist in the 2018 SPLOST "Heritage Center" line (available balance reported as $96,029.69), but the item was tabled pending additional bids to evaluate raising the roof.
In other actions, commissioners approved updated nominations for the Baxley/Appling County Hospital Authority Board (incumbents were among those nominated) and adopted an updated Timber Harvesting Ordinance intended to address road and ditch damage associated with timber operations. The Pineland Behavioral Health & Developmental Disabilities lease renewal was tabled so the county attorney could present an addendum before the board signs a new contract.
During an executive session on personnel, the board ended the probationary period for Roads & Bridges Superintendent Carroll Weaver and approved an annual salary increase to $66,560. All motions and votes detailed above were recorded as approved unanimously.
The board scheduled the next budget workshop for Aug. 6 and aims to adopt the FY2025 budget and millage rate at its Sept. 10 meeting.
