County honors longtime employee, approves fireworks contract and memorial plaque; parks, roads and landfill report progress

The board approved a fireworks contract for the county's annual display on June 29, 2024 for $15,385. Commissioner Theodore Wilkerson suggested the county plan broader Fourth of July events at the Ag Center; commissioners expressed support for the idea.
During public input, the board approved a request by Keith Dyal to allow a state-provided memorial marker honoring John Aycock to be placed on Dunn's Lake Road at no cost to the county.
Parks & Recreation Director Timmy McGuirt reported that registrations are open for Allstar tournaments and that the county's swim team has 125 members; the department plans infant swim lessons and on-site lifeguard-trainer certification. Roads Superintendent Carroll Weaver reported multiple road repairs and inspections in progress. Landfill Manager Robert Eunice said an EPD inspection scored 90/100 and that a recent scrap-tire event collected 734 tires; a second event is scheduled for May 18, 2024.
