Appling County approves minimum bids for several tracts, tables landfill household policy and directs easement outreach

The Appling County Board of Commissioners approved minimum bids and authorized listing several county-owned tracts for bid after an executive-session land discussion on April 2.

The board approved letting the following tracts for bid with commissioners voting to set minimums as recorded in the meeting minutes: approximately 175 acres north of the airport with a minimum bid of $550,000; 1.5 acres on Zoar Road with a minimum bid of $15,000; and 23 acres at Falling Rocks RV Park near Deen’s Landing with a minimum bid of $250,000. Motions to approve the minimum bids and sales were recorded as approved during the post-executive-session motions.

During a separate discussion earlier in the meeting, Landfill Supervisor Robert Eunice said the county handles roughly 25 loads per day and previously transported household garbage to Toombs County at $35 per ton. Eunice was advised to stop accepting household garbage effective April 4, 2024; commissioners later tabled the broader policy discussion on household garbage at the landfill (motion to table by Commissioner Theodore Wilkerson, seconded by Commissioner Daryl Edwards). The motion to table was recorded with Commissioners Harris and Leggett named as in favor and Commissioner Sellers noted as opposed; meeting notes indicate the motion was carried.

In response to a public comment, Commissioner Edwards moved and Commissioner Leggett seconded a directive for the County Manager to seek easements from landowners for Landing Road to return the route to county ownership; that motion passed unanimously. The meeting record also notes tire-collection events for free citizen disposal on May 4 and May 18 funded through a landfill tire grant.

The board moved Kathy Sellers’ supervision back to the Recreation Department (from County Manager supervision) following executive session; that motion was approved. The meeting adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
