Appling County hires Berkeley Research Group for $100,000 hospital performance review

Meadows told the board BRG and an alternative, ADAMS Management Services, returned comparable proposals but that BRG—recommended by Joseph P. Ierardi, CEO of Wayne Memorial Hospital—would likely provide the most comprehensive product. The ADAMS proposal from Rome, Georgia, was cited at $85,000 plus travel and per diem; BRG’s proposal from Emeryville, California, was cited at $100,000 plus expenses.
The board approved the BRG contract and separately authorized funding by combining the county’s contingency line and American Rescue Plan funds. Meadows noted the assessment was not budgeted but presented four funding options; commissioners voted to use a combination of contingency funds (current balance cited during the meeting) and American Rescue funds.
Cindy Tomberlin and Lee Lewis told the commissioners they would work to implement recommendations from BRG promptly if the assessment identified operational changes. The motion to accept BRG and the accompanying funding plan passed unanimously.
The study is intended to evaluate hospital operations and recommend steps to improve performance; the board did not set a public deadline for the study in the meeting record. The county manager indicated the consultants would begin work after contract finalization and funding allocation.
