Sheriff Mark Melton told the Appling County Board of Commissioners Feb. 6 that he wants timber behind the Sheriff's Office cleared and the proceeds used to pay for fencing to better secure the property.
Melton said the six-acre tract could yield roughly $10,000 and that fencing likely would need to enclose 7–8 acres; he described past visibility and access concerns at the site. Vice Chairman Charlie Leggett offered to donate his section of adjacent land to increase the acreage available for timber sale proceeds.
The board approved a motion to seek sealed bids to cut timber on approximately six acres and separately for an area on the north side of the Sheriff's Office. County Attorney Tracy Brown recommended sealed bids rather than informal quotes.
Later in the meeting, after executive session on personnel and real estate matters, the commission approved the sale of approximately 1.5 acres on Zoar Road (a former dumpsite area) by unanimous vote.
The minutes do not record a buyer, sale price, or final fencing cost; Sheriff Melton said he will obtain formal fencing bids (bob-wire, chain-link) and the board asked staff to follow procurement procedures for timber and property sales.
