Steve Card, president of the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association, announced on Dec. 2 that Appling County Parks & Recreation has been named GRPA's Agency of the Year.
Card told the Appling County Board of Commissioners that GRPA received more than 230 applications and cited Appling County's “tremendous growth in leadership and serving the community,” singling out the department’s new program, Amazing Appling Athletes, as an example of its adaptability and community service.
County Manager Reid Lovett praised the department's expansion and later, in his manager's report, noted an “overwhelming increase in participants” in recreation programs. The board heard the presentation and no formal action was required.
The recognition covers departmental achievements at the county level and GRPA regional and state engagement; the county did not present financial details of the award during the meeting. The board adjourned at 6:15 p.m.
