Local nonprofit asks Orleans council to back youth bike camp

The organizer said Team Pease now works in seven schools, including Orleans, and runs in-school and summer programs that teach self-regulation and basic bike skills.
"We are in 7 schools. In Orleans, we see kids weekly, grades k through 8," the Presenter said, outlining the nonprofit’s growth since 2019. She tied the camp to research on adverse childhood experiences, saying positive childhood experiences such as sport and community programs can help children manage stress and build confidence.
The camp would run about 8:30 a.m. to noon, target ages 7 to 13 and aim to enroll roughly 50 children. Organizer said Orleans Tri Kappa has committed to buy 30 helmets and the group has about 10 bikes donated so far. "The dates we're looking at are June 22 through 26th of 2026," the Presenter said.
The presenter described logistics and community partners: she said she had discussed use of a school parking lot with "Mister Ellis" for a staging area, reserved parts of the Monon Trail with "Sadie at Radius" for workshops, and hoped Orleans police could provide road-safety talks or participate in a community ride. Council members asked how children without bikes would be accommodated; the Presenter said the program would provide bikes free or at low cost when possible.
Council members offered support and local ideas. Chair (speaker 1) said it "sounds like a... really good thing" and other members suggested pursuing national funding and linking the camp to services such as a 1st Chance Center. Volunteers and local businesses were offered as possible sponsors.
The presenter said she will follow up with town contacts and volunteers to finalize logistics. The council did not take a vote; next steps are for the organizer and town staff to coordinate parking, trail use and any police participation.
