Orleans council approves $2,500 to remove sick oak tree in Congress Square

Council members heard from staff that the soil beneath the square is heavily compacted and the tree’s condition is deteriorated. As one council speaker relayed the arborist’s assessment, "he said that there's nothing can be done for the tree because the soil the problem with Commerce Square is that it's it's used so heavily that that's very compacted." ProTree provided a $2,500 removal estimate; Moderator (S6) moved to approve the cost and the council voiced approval by responding 'aye.'
Council members directed staff to schedule the removal and to charge the cost to the parks budget. The action will allow removal and disposal of hazardous wood and prepare the square for future replanting or other landscape work.
