Cheverly police report traffic enforcement boost; RFP for automated enforcement to be presented

Chief David Morris and department staff told the council that automated enforcement and targeted patrols have ramped up traffic enforcement on Columbia Park Road and Cheverly Avenue.
"In the short period of time that we've been operating, our traffic officers have yielded over a 100 traffic stops just in that immediate area," Chief Morris said, and staff noted the camera is generating a considerable number of violations.
The chief said the department will present a request-for-proposals for a broader automated enforcement program at the town work session in two weeks so council can weigh options, providers, and service levels.
Deputy staff outlined a youth-explorer initiative (ages 14'20) with applications opening May 1 and previewed two enforcement and engagement campaigns: Blue Light Nights on March 20 and 21 and a public safety day planned for June 5.
The department also said it will present an RFP for automated enforcement to give the council a fuller picture of program options and provider differences.
