Kankakee Valley School Corp. officials on July 28 approved a series of routine but operationally significant items, including payroll and claims totaling $1,539,149.72, a 2% pay increase for bus drivers for the 2025–26 school year and contracts for HVAC and chiller repairs.
The meeting opened with the Chair calling the session to order, a moment of silent meditation and the pledge of allegiance. The Chair asked that Katie read the district mission: “Our mission is to guide students to become informed, engaged citizens, and curious lifelong learners.”
Staff presented the consent agenda items, which the board approved nearly all by single motions with unanimous 7–0 votes. That included approval of prior minutes and the payroll and incorporation claims for $1,539,149.72; acceptance of listed retirements, resignations and leave requests; certified and classified staffing appointments; and three transfers.
On personnel and student-support measures, the board approved a memorandum of understanding and release of liability for a 2025–26 special-needs student and authorized a contract for professional interpreters to assist a deaf student during the school year. The board also approved terminating the Wheatfield dishwasher position effective July 23, 2025, as presented by staff.
Transportation items approved included a 2% pay increase for bus drivers for the 2025–26 school year and an adjustment to special education bus driver rates, plus a change to pay bus aides on an hourly rather than a daily basis beginning in 2025–26.
Facilities and maintenance actions included awarding Precision Control Systems a contract not to exceed $39,188 to repair the chiller at KBIS and a separate contract not to exceed $7,160 to repair an HVAC unit serving the Halftime Building at Katy High School. Staff also recommended and the board approved several facility-use requests for Pop Warner activities, including use of the Wheatfield gymnasium and the middle school track and field from August through December.
The board approved revised and updated board policies at second reading and authorized Solution Tree professional development for six staff members.
In reports, staff noted Rhonda Yates, the district director of transportation, said pickups and drop-offs along state highways are door-side as required by law. Staff also congratulated graduate Alex Barr on being selected in the 12th round of the 2025 major league baseball draft. Administrative notes included a correction to new student registration opening (July 31 at 4:00 a.m.), upcoming ECA risk reports at the next meeting, budget adoption and hearing dates listed in the packet, and the ISBA state conference scheduled for Sept. 15–16.
All formal motions on the record were seconded and carried by unanimous votes unless otherwise noted. The board adjourned following the scheduled items.
