Town approves $6,524 VFD replacement at water plant and OKs sale of surplus pumps

The Monroe Town Council approved a $6,524 contract to replace a variable-frequency drive (VFD) at the town well house and authorized the sale of two surplus transfer pumps.
The council voted after staff explained the VFD was sized for the old well pump and cannot run the upsized motor installed during recent water-plant rehabilitation. “That quote came back at $6,524,” the staff member said, urging the council to approve the replacement so the new motor can run at full capacity. The purchase was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
Council members also heard that two transfer pumps and motors removed during the project are stored in a town facility. Staff recommended marketing the units and returning any proceeds to the water fund. A motion to sell the pumps was seconded and approved.
The staff member said the town may hold the old VFD for backup if it proves useful, or seek to sell it to recover some cost. The replacements and sales are intended to keep the rehabilitated water plant operating at designed performance while minimizing repeated emergency repairs.
Next steps: staff will finalize vendor paperwork for the VFD replacement and advertise or solicit offers for the surplus pumps; any proceeds will be directed to the municipal water fund.
