Council urged to press county after town told not to bring strays to county shelter

Kingsford Heights police told the council on July 28 that a change in La Porte County animal-shelter practice has left the town dealing with stray and abandoned animals it lacks the resources to care for.
A police department representative recounted a recent case in which a resident found newborn kittens that the county shelter would not accept. "So now we are being regarded as animal control and an animal shelter," the officer said, describing the burden this places on town staff and volunteers.
The officer said the town lacks the training, resources and funding to care for some animals and asked the council to ask the county for help. Presenter (town staff) agreed to draft a letter from the town president to La Porte County seeking clarification and a policy solution.
Council members discussed prior informal attempts to coordinate with the county and noted the problem appears cyclical. No formal county response was available at the meeting; the council directed staff to prepare the letter for the president’s signature.
The council did not adopt any ordinance or new local protocol at the meeting; it took direction only to pursue a county-level response and document the town’s concerns.
