Upper Darby students highlighted for leadership, arts and science at board meeting

At its March meeting the Upper Darby School District recognized student leaders, arts programs and dozens of Delaware County Science Fair awardees; principals and the student board representative described school programs that emphasize inclusion, leadership and community service.
Hillcrest Elementary School’s 5th-grade student council and Beverly Hills Middle School’s arts programs were put forward to the Upper Darby School District Board of School Directors during the work session portion of the board’s March meeting, with principals and students describing leadership activities, performances and community outreach.
Susan Campbell, identified in the record as Hillcrest’s principal, told the board that the 5th-grade student council had led fundraising for families after a December apartment fire, created a buddy program, organized recess rotations and assisted with tutoring and yearbook decisions. "As educators, we continue to empower our students to take on responsibilities, accept accountability, and step up to lead," Campbell said.
Wayne Remy, identified as principal of Beverly Hills Middle School, described the school’s arts offerings — the school musical, art club and a ukulele club — as programs that build belonging and student confidence. "These programs not only highlight student talent, but also provide meaningful opportunities for creativity, collaboration, and personal growth," Remy said.
Student speakers from both schools described how their clubs and councils operate: regular elections for officers, poster and video campaigns, teacher endorsements, and twice-monthly meetings guided by a student secretary who keeps the agenda. Students credited the experiences with helping peers, organizing community donations (including visits and gifts to the Upper Darby Senior Center) and preparing older students for middle school leadership roles.
The board also recognized a wide roster of district students for musical and science achievements. The superintendent read names of Upper Darby students selected for the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) Region 6 ensembles and listed Delaware County Science Fair winners across categories (behavioral science, botany, chemistry, earth and space, engineering, medicine/health, and team competitions). Many students and teams qualified for regional contests and received special awards.
The presentations and recognitions were informational; no votes or formal policy actions were connected to the student or arts items. The board applauded the students and invited the community to upcoming concerts and district events.
