Kingsford Heights council weighs two versions of park smoking ordinance, seeks park-board input

Kingsford Heights — Council members discussed two proposed versions of an ordinance that would restrict smoking on town-owned park property but took no final vote Oct. 27.
The park board and public raised concerns about where any allowed smoking areas would be located, especially near playgrounds and pavilions. A park board member and public commenters asked for clarity on whether pavilions and playground areas would be included; one commenter said that under Indiana rules pavilions and areas close to the building are subject to restrictions.
The chair asked the clerk and park staff to provide both draft versions of the ordinance to council members and the park board for review ahead of the next meeting. "We don't have to define the designated areas in the ordinance," the chair said, but council members noted it would be helpful to work with park-board members to identify practical locations for any designated smoking area if the modified version is chosen.
