At the Oct. 14 meeting a resident, Andrew Pence, told the council that sewage backed up into his house after he had called the town’s emergency utilities line. Pence said two plumbers attended and the first visit resulted in nearly $1,200 in charges; a subsequent plumber traced the blockage to the town’s main sewer line, not the resident’s private service.
Utilities staff confirmed an open manhole was cleared and that the blockage was on the town side. The utilities representative said staff had earlier opened manholes when complaints were called in but that, in this instance, the initial call suggested a private‑side problem. Town staff said a crew responded and cleared the manhole during a holiday period.
The town attorney asked for copies of the invoices and said the town would prepare a waiver and release for the resident to sign as part of any reimbursement settlement to prevent further claims. The attorney also asked for the resident’s address and paperwork to process the request.
