Kingsford Heights adopts interconnection standards to allow renewable generation hookups

The Kingsford Heights Town Council moved Oct. 14 to adopt interconnection standards intended to govern how a resident may connect a renewable generator (for example, rooftop solar) to the town’s electrical system. The draft ordinance, adapted from another municipality and recommended by INPA guidance, establishes technical and contracting steps for interconnection and requires compliance with town standards and any required contracts with the utility partner.
Town counsel said the ordinance establishes the standards needed before a resident may sell power back to the system and characterized the measure as a model form recommended by INPA’s general counsel. The chair said the immediate impetus was a resident request but the ordinance is being adopted to apply to any future applicants.
Council voted unanimously on the first reading by title; the clerk said the second and third readings would be scheduled for the Oct. 27 meeting to finalize adoption.
