Resident urges Knox council to 'get back to basics' on code enforcement

A Parkview resident told the Knox City Council that a neighboring property has been in poor condition since they moved in earlier this year and urged the council to strengthen basic code enforcement.
The resident (speaker S3) said repeated efforts to reach the code enforcement department resulted in noncommittal responses and described overgrown yards, accumulated trash and a vehicle on the property that had become infested. "We need to maintain the outside of our homes and the trash and whatnot," the resident said, asking the council to ensure enforcement focuses on basic housekeeping that affects neighbors' health and safety.
The mayor (speaker S1) explained that code enforcement cases follow a legal process and suggested the resident attend the Board of Works hearings (held the fourth Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.) to see how cases are handled; the mayor also said staff would check the specific complaint with Lonnie and follow up. The resident said they were not demanding special treatment but wanted the city to address visible maintenance issues.
The council did not take immediate enforcement action in the meeting beyond the mayor's pledge to check the case and bring it to the appropriate staff and Board of Works forum.
