Neighbors press Brookings council over years-long nuisance at 300 Marine Drive

Several neighbors addressed the Brookings City Council on June 22 about chronic maintenance and health concerns at 300 Marine Drive.
Jonathan Williams, who said he lives at 16720 Marine Drive, told the council the situation has worsened over the past year with many people living in outbuildings and campers, approximately 14 dogs on the property, debris spilling onto shared driveways and the public road, persistent rodent problems and blocked access that at times prevented garbage collection. "The mess has grown exponentially," Williams said, adding that attempts to persuade the property owner to clean up had been unsuccessful.
Property owner Barbara Tangier, who said she owns an adjacent property at 16720 Marine Drive, submitted photographs to the council and said the accumulation of debris occasionally spreads onto her property and onto the road, vehicles have blocked fire access, and there is a strong odor consistent with animal waste. She told the council she had contacted city code enforcement (naming Tony Baron) and that she learned the city had issued another notice of abatement; she said she was skeptical previous notices had achieved lasting change.
Both speakers urged follow up from city staff. The council did not take formal action at the meeting on the complaint beyond acknowledging receipt and noting abatement notices had been served.
