Brookings council appoints Anthony Bond to vacant seat after evening interviews

The Brookings City Council on June 22 accepted Councilor Christie Fulton’s resignation and, after interviewing three applicants, appointed Anthony Bond to fill council position number 4.

Council members announced the vacancy and described the application window (May 4–June 15) before interviewing the three finalists. Applicants answered a standardized set of nine questions with two minutes to respond. One applicant gave the last name "Noggle," another identified himself as Jim, and Anthony Bond emphasized constituent advocacy, collaboration with other council members and downtown revitalization efforts.

During deliberations, multiple council members said all three candidates were strong and noted prior service on advisory bodies as a positive. A council member moved to appoint Anthony Bond, a motion that was seconded and carried. Immediately after the vote, Bond recited the oath of office and was sworn in.

Bond told the council he sees the role as an advocate for constituents and said he has experience working with local businesses and the planning commission. "I am an advocate for their constituents," Bond said during his interview, adding that promoting downtown revitalization and tourism were top priorities.

The presiding officer thanked all applicants for applying and encouraged them to remain engaged in community service and consider running in the November election. The new appointment will last until the end of the year and will appear on the November ballot as required by local election rules.

The council then proceeded to the next agenda items.
