Superintendent Wayne Barker announced he will retire as superintendent of Northwest Allen County Schools effective June 30, 2027, and said he was announcing the decision now to give the board time for a thoughtful leadership transition.
"I submitted to the board, last week announcing my intention to retire as superintendent of Northwest Allen County Schools effective 06/30/2027," Superintendent Wayne Barker said, noting the decision followed "a lot of thought and prayer and consideration and reflection." He told the board his focus for the coming year will remain on supporting students and ensuring a smooth handoff for the district's next leader.
At the same meeting the board approved the proposed 2027–28 school calendar, which Barker said had been shared with families, vetted by the teachers association and administrators, and designed to meet state requirements using a flexibility waiver that allows the district to meet required minutes/days (178 student days; 184 teacher days) while adding two professional-development days.
Board members thanked Barker for his service and praised his leadership during remarks following the announcement. President Hathaway and other trustees expressed appreciation for Barker's decades in education and emphasized planning for continuity.
The board took no formal action on a superintendent search at the meeting; Barker said the timing was intended to provide the board "sufficient time to ensure a smooth transition."
