Council approves revised floor plan for 881 Sonora Road recreation building to accommodate community use and elections

The Tyrone City Council approved a revised floor plan for the 881 Sonora Road Recreation Department project (PW202404), changes staff said will improve community-room flexibility and allow the building to be used for elections.

Scott (staff) walked the council through the revisions (called Option A), which remove and relocate several doors (including eliminating one exterior office door and removing door M while adding door P) to better separate nighttime events from secured areas and to provide access to the arts-and-crafts room and an additional bathroom. Scott said the changes increase storage near the multiuse community room and allow for secure access and code-controlled entry for areas where election equipment might be kept.

Scott said water and wastewater plans were near completion (water about 80% and wastewater about 70%) and that much of the nonstructural work (stud work and interior changes) had been done in-house to speed the schedule. He said the project team hoped to have the corridor, community room and associated bathrooms ready for use by November to support elections, though finishing all work would take longer. Scott said insurance proceeds of about $100,000 had been recorded to the general fund and would help cover short-term needs; he did not provide a final total construction cost.

Brandon (staff) said he had met on-site with Brianna Garrett (head of Fed Elections) and that she was satisfied with the plans and comfortable with the security measures.

Councilmember motioned to approve the revised floor plan; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.

What happens next: staff will continue with water and wastewater permitting work, complete interior finishes and return with contractor prices and schedule updates as work continues.
