The Tyrone City Council voted to update the town's tourist accommodation ordinance (section 22-6-62) to allow residents to rent their property for up to 14 days per calendar year without obtaining a town permit.
Brandon (staff) explained the update would let property owners rent for short event-related stays (he cited the FIFA World Cup as an example) and that the change aims to simplify temporary hosting for a small number of nights. Council members asked whether exempt rentals would avoid taxes; staff clarified "Only the income tax" would not apply under the exemption but "they do have to pay other tax[s]," meaning lodging-related taxes and registration/financial tracking remain.
Council members also asked how the town would know when properties are rented. Brandon said there will be a countywide registration and marketing system (described in the meeting as a "soccer housing bureau" or similar) that lists participating homes; the town would have access to registration and financial tracking. The town attorney advised that registration reduces the town's unknowns and said the model is similar to limited-event listing systems used in other municipalities.
A councilmember moved to update section 22-6-62; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
What happens next: staff will implement the registration arrangement with the regional housing/marketing system and update administrative processes to track short-term listings and taxes.
