Tyrone council approves Lake Pendleton dam construction plans to allow bidding

The Tyrone City Council voted to approve final construction plans for the Lake Pendleton Dam upgrade project so staff can solicit bids and advance construction.
Scott (staff) told the council the Lake Pendleton dam is regulated under the Georgia Safe Dams Act and was upgraded to category 1 by Georgia Safe Dams in 2018 because a failure could cause probable loss of life and the lake's storage exceeds 100 acre-feet. Scott said the set of plans before the council had been reviewed by Georgia Safe Dams and revised to address their comments.
Council members clarified that the council had not previously approved final construction plans for bidding; Scott said approving the plans now would permit staff to put the request for proposals (RFP) out for contractors. Brandon (staff) said the project budget being discussed was about $2,100,000, with roughly 75% of that coming from a grant and the town covering the remaining 25 percent. He cautioned bids could come in over the estimate and that council would revisit funding decisions if necessary.
A council member moved to approve the 2025 Lake Pendleton Dam upgrade project, PW202105; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
What happens next: staff will issue the solicitation for bids and return to council if bids exceed budgeted amounts or if additional council action is needed to award a contract.
