Martinez Unified names Renee Lopez special education program specialist

The Martinez Unified Board of Education introduced Renee Lopez as the district’s new special education program specialist at its June 22 meeting. Interim Superintendent announced Lopez’s appointment and described her as having 24 years of experience in the district, including roles as a resource specialist, extended‑school‑year principal, assessment and data specialist, director of educational services and vice principal at elementary and middle school levels.
Trustees praised Lopez’s experience and character during board remarks. “She’s an incredibly caring individual and a wonderful choice for this position,” a trustee said, and other trustees offered congratulations and welcomed her to the role. The board noted Lopez’s transition will create a vacancy at Martinez Junior High School in the vice principal role; the district will begin immediate recruitment to fill that vacancy.
Lopez was unable to attend the meeting because of a family emergency, the superintendent said. The board did not take additional action beyond the introduction and welcome; no public comments were made about the hire.
