Iowa City Senior Center previews summer concerts, intergenerational reading program and gallery opening

At the June 18 meeting of the Iowa City Senior Center Commission, staff reviewed recent and upcoming summer programming, highlighting concerts, intergenerational activities and multiple community-facing events.
Emily Griffin, a staff member at the center, said the Beaker Brothers performance was moved indoors because of rain and drew a large audience. "It was really lovely. It was full. It was lots of people dancing and having a good time," Griffin said. She credited organizers and technical staff for keeping the program running despite the weather.
Griffin described 'Stories Across Generations,' which registered roughly 20 seniors paired with about 20 students in grades 5–8 to read the same book and exchange letters; staff plan a celebratory event in August. She also said the center’s queer elders group will participate in the Pride parade and plan to staff a booth.
Other items Griffin flagged: an induction cooking demo led by Green Iowa AmeriCorps; a multi-part John Adams/Constitution film and discussion series tied to the nation's 250th; a gallery opening on July 17 featuring member art; a lecture on the Eric Morton papers scheduled for July 27 with David McCarthy from the university; a discovery hike at Kent Park on July 28; and a Voices of Experience concert on Aug. 13 from 2–3 p.m.
Griffin encouraged commissioners to help with outreach — staffing booths, attending gallery openings and welcoming new members — and noted a printed program guide will be available soon with registration details.
