The chair said data centers have arrived "fast and furious" in recent months but the county lacks sufficient policy and legal analysis to make fully informed zoning decisions. "They are eligible to come to this community, but we don't feel like our economic development, our legal team, have enough information to make that determination," the chair said, and asked that commissioners place a six-month moratorium on data centers so the county can complete a study.
Commissioner Williams briefly expressed support, saying, "Allow them not to come," and Commissioner Gray seconded the motion to move the moratorium proposal to the next regular session. The work session record shows the item was advanced by voice vote for further consideration; commissioners did not adopt a final moratorium ordinance at this session.
The action directs county staff and legal counsel to prepare proposed regulations and to return to the commission with recommendations at the regular session, where any ordinance or moratorium would require a formal vote to take effect.
