Police chief outlines safeguards for FLOCK camera system and limits on live access

Vargas said the system has helped identify criminal activity around town and noted that one officer who had been out on injury is expected to return to duty in February. When Alderman Ben Stark asked about protections against misuse of the system, Vargas said Police Captain Goewert checks access logs every day to ensure the system is not used for personal agendas. She acknowledged the vendor’s system can provide a 'live view' function but said the city has not enabled live viewing because of cost and because the department does not see the operational benefit.
Vargas also said the department will have access to new FLOCK cameras planned for the Mackenzie Pointe plaza. Businesses on the plaza, including Dierberg’s, will be granted only limited access to cameras on their own lots and will not be able to access other FLOCK systems beyond their property, she said.
