Several residents proposed a blunt amendment to reduce the appropriation to $7,000,000; supporters said the town had a surplus from unfilled positions and that households on fixed incomes could not sustain the proposed increases. Finance staff and select board members said a reduction of that magnitude would force cuts to planned personnel and services and would require line‑by‑line rebalancing.
The assembly adopted the $7,000,000 amendment on a show‑of‑cards vote; the amended Article 12 then went to a secret ballot and passed (Yes 92, No 12). Afterward staff said they would return with details on where reductions would be made and hold further public briefings on recruitment and long‑range fiscal planning.
