Elkton Middle School reports lower absenteeism and higher test scores; credits school resource officer

Erick Brown, principal of Elkton Middle School, told the Town of Elkton on April 15 that the school has seen measurable improvements in attendance, behavior and academics.
Brown reported a 10% reduction in chronic absenteeism and "significant decreases in discipline referrals, including incidents of disrespect, fighting, and physical attacks." He said mathematics achievement increased 5 percentage points and reading achievement increased 10 percentage points; he added that all subgroups showed growth, citing African American students (math +6%, reading +12%) and English-language learners (math +7%, reading +6%).
Brown praised Officer TJ Wilmot, a former Elkton Middle School student now serving as the onsite school resource officer, saying Wilmot has built strong relationships with current students and consistently de-escalates situations, preventing further disruption.
Commissioner Broomell asked how the community can contribute to the school-affiliated food bank; Brown said donations of food, clothing and toiletries may be directed to Community School Advisor Hope Stammler.
