Mayor Kevin Phillips proclaimed June as Trails Month in Port Royal on June 10, recognizing the Spanish Moss Trail’s recent extension into the town.
The proclamation notes the trail’s role in connecting residents and visitors to natural and cultural resources. "We will be announcing some sort of a celebration and a ribbon cutting at the crossing," said Joe DeVito, chairman of the Friends of the Spanish Moss Trail, who told council the group completed the connection across Rebow Road after about five years of negotiations and easement work.
DeVito said the project progressed in several phases and thanked landowners and staff who accommodated easements and driveway moves to allow the trail to cross. He described plans to extend the trail further to Sands Beach and northward to improve regional connectivity and benefit downtown businesses.
Dean Moss, who joined the remarks, traced earlier funding and planning for the trail to the PATH Foundation and private donors, noting the cost of building and maintaining trails has increased over time. "The cost of doing this stuff has just gone crazy," he said, urging continued partnership among the authority, municipalities and the community.
The council applauded the volunteers and advocates who led the trail connection and invited the public to the forthcoming ribbon-cutting, which DeVito said will be scheduled once county punch-list items are complete.
