Students showcase Laken Prep's expanding dual-language immersion program

Student ambassadors from Laken Prep Academy presented the school's Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program at the Dec. 10 Littleton Elementary School District meeting, describing classroom models, current grade coverage and planned expansion.
"Dual language is teaching in two languages," one student ambassador said when explaining that Laken Prep teaches reading in English while teaching certain content areas such as math and science in Spanish. Presenters described a "roller coaster" model that rotates instruction so students receive daily Spanish exposure and said the program builds biliteracy and future career opportunities.
Principal Nicole D'Orazo introduced the student ambassadors and described community and embassy partnerships that support the program. Presenters said the school has hired three teachers from Spain (named in the presentation as Mr. Salvador, Mr. Martinez and Mr. Fuster) and said Laken Prep is expanding its DLI cohort year by year: the program moved from K'-2 last year to K'-3 this year and is planned to grow to K'-5 over the next two years.
Students and staff also described classroom activities and community involvement, including career night contributions and service-learning projects that connected families and community partners with students.
The presentation concluded with an invitation to questions; board members praised the students for their work and the principal for program leadership. No formal action was taken; the showcase was presented for information and recognition.
