During the public-comment period at the Aurora East USD 131 board meeting on July 6, resident Javier Solano criticized the board for not asking enough questions during presentations and urged greater public-facing scrutiny, especially on curriculum matters.
"I feel like you guys are not asking enough questions when it comes to, like, things that come through this board meeting area," Solano said, urging the board to pose questions during public presentations so parents can see what is being asked and discussed.
Board President Cifuentes and other board members responded that board packets and agenda materials are provided in advance and that members conduct additional one-on-one follow-ups with administration when needed. The superintendent acknowledged the concern and suggested a practical step: the district could host a workshop to show parents how to access board documents and participate more effectively. "Maybe host a meeting with parents... here's the way you can get some deeper information... here's how you can get into board docs," the superintendent said.
Board members encouraged residents to email questions and to raise them at meetings; they also said parent groups and district advisory committees could be part of future outreach. No formal policy change or board action on public engagement was recorded at the meeting.
