Residents and commissioners press for answers after shooting and neighborhood fireworks damage

Residents raised alarm at the commission meeting about an incident on July 4 that left multiple people injured and generated neighborhood property damage.

A resident who identified himself as McCanns described fireworks set off in a residential area that he said became “too close,” recounting a garage fire and damaged vehicles and urging clearer, more concrete locations for fireworks displays. "It grew up. It must come down," he said, and asked the city to consider staging displays in a park rather than in neighborhoods.

Commissioners and the city manager discussed the shooting near Court and Clemens Street, citing the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office as the lead investigator. The mayor and commissioners emphasized reliance on official releases rather than social media. "Look to official channels to make sure that you're getting the correct story," one commissioner said.

Multiple commissioners recommended the commission review fireworks regulations and consider changes to reduce risks after irregular, high-intensity consumer fireworks were reported across the region. They also asked staff to examine where liability and permit enforcement might come into play and suggested a future meeting or work session to evaluate ordinance amendments.

The meeting did not produce a formal policy change; commissioners asked staff to gather facts, coordinate with the sheriff's office, and bring a report on potential ordinance or permitting changes to a future meeting.
