Mamaroneck board asks NYSDOT for engineering review of Boston Post Road to improve school safety

The Town Board of the Town of Mamaroneck voted unanimously on May 4 to ask the New York State Department of Transportation to conduct an engineering and traffic investigation of the Boston Post Road/US Route 1 corridor near Mamaroneck High School, Central School and the Hammocks/Weaver crossing.
The resolution, introduced and explained by the Chair, asks NYSDOT Region 8 to evaluate whether the posted speed limit should be reduced to 25 miles per hour on all or part of the corridor, to review existing or potential school speed-zone treatments, and to consider near-term pedestrian safety improvements such as signal timing adjustments, visibility upgrades, crosswalk enhancements and warning signage. "So this is the resolution from the town requesting that they review the Boston Post Road, and look at several safety things, and among them would be reducing the speed limit to 25 miles an hour," the Chair said during the discussion.
The nut of the board’s concern is student and pedestrian safety where school traffic meets a busy state highway. The board and school representatives previously found the site did not meet NYSDOT’s criteria for a formal school zone; lowering the speed limit across part of the corridor is the board’s fallback option to reduce vehicle speeds near school crossings.
Board members noted that an application for a speed-limit change must come from the municipality because the road is a state highway. Committee member (S7), who moved the measure, said the resolution authorizes transmission of supporting materials to NYSDOT and copies to local legislative representatives and the Mamaroneck Union Free School District.
The board did not set a timeline for state action; the resolution requests NYSDOT conduct an engineering review and report back on feasible corridor-level improvements. The resolution passed without recorded opposition.
Next steps: the town will forward the resolution and supporting packet to NYSDOT Region 8 and local stakeholders and await the agency's engineering findings.
