Park Academy seeks clearance for indoor simulator truck-driving training at 135 Day Street

Park Academy on July 8 presented a pre-application to the Newington Planning & Zoning Commission seeking confirmation that indoor, simulator-based truck-driving instruction is permitted at 135 Day Street.
Praveen Elak, who identified himself as owner and president of Park Academy, told commissioners the proposed Connecticut licensed private occupational school would use an existing office building; he said the program would focus on computer-based learning, simulator training, orientation, testing and administrative work. "No outdoor training activities are proposed. No truck storage, no maintenance, fueling, or trucking operations will occur at this location," Elak said.
Staff explained the town’s zoning text leaves some ambiguity about whether such a use fits squarely under existing industrial enumerations. Commissioners and staff discussed restricting the approved use to indoor, virtual training if the project moves forward, and agreed that any future proposal to add outdoor driving courses or truck storage would need separate review and appropriate special permits. Commissioners also noted that licensing and on-road testing for commercial licenses falls under the Connecticut DMV, not the school.
The commission indicated it would consider an administrative approval for an indoor-only training program but advised the applicant to return with details if he later pursues exterior training or vehicle storage.
