York Suburban board briefed on high school renovation; bids to open July 28

"We are releasing those documents to bidders tomorrow," the project presenter said, noting a pre-bid meeting for interested contractors on June 30 and a five‑week bid period that ends with a public bid opening at 2 p.m. on July 28. The presenters told the board they expect to bring an update at the August 10 meeting and, if needed, return for a decision on August 24. If schedules hold, they said, construction would commence in September.
The presentation laid out the project’s phasing: the science‑lab renovation is prioritized and will be supported by modular classrooms so instruction can continue while work proceeds. The presenters said modulars would be installed to house science teachers beginning with the 2027 school year while other academic areas are renovated over multiple summers and semesters.
Design details reviewed for the board included expanded parking and a revised drop‑off loop to reduce neighborhood congestion, a new announced front entry with a covered canopy, secure entries for after‑hours events such as the natatorium, and a receiving dock sized to handle deliveries without disrupting circulation. Project staff said they are replacing exterior unit ventilators with internal rooftop HVAC units to bring classrooms into PDE square‑foot and ventilation compliance.
The plan also includes a rebuilt natatorium with a six‑lane competition pool, upgraded filtration and air capture at the gutter system, retractable bleachers to expand deck space, and ADA lifts and observation seating at deck level. Officials said the new pool would be fully code compliant and carry a long‑term warranty strategy to reduce recurring maintenance costs.
Project staff said hazardous‑materials abatement in older building areas is out for bid separately and will be contracted in advance of prime construction. After the board approves bids, the district will issue notices of intent to award and a notice to proceed to trigger contractor mobilization and on‑site construction supervision.
Board members asked about bid‑day logistics and whether the district would mark the milestone; presenters reiterated that the process is an open public procurement and that the district will document bids and provide board reports as requested. The board did not take a formal vote on the project at this meeting; the presenters asked members to plan for an August update and a possible August 24 vote.
