The Beloit School District board unanimously directed administration on June 23 to develop a plan to sell or lease Kolak (the district office) and to move staff and programs to appropriate locations as part of the district’s broader right‑sizing and budget work.
Board members and staff discussed practical constraints — phone and IT infrastructure housed at Kolak, where the district’s Mitel phone hub sits, and the need to maintain accessible, ADA‑compliant meeting sites — and considered intermediate steps such as moving staff to one floor while leasing the other. Administration noted that commercial real‑estate markets have weakened since the building was constructed and that sale proceeds are uncertain, but that selling or leasing the building could replenish reserves and reduce ongoing utilities costs.
Dan Shouf provided market context, noting the building’s original construction cost and how commercial values and construction costs have changed since 2019. The board also voted unanimously to move forward with sale of a set of smaller vacant lots linked to the property; administration will provide a list of lot locations and a marketing strategy.
What happens next: Administration will identify a realtor, develop a relocation and marketing plan, and present a timeline and financial estimate to the board before listing. The board signaled it wants options (sale vs. lease) assessed and a plan for where staff and meeting functions would be located if Kolak is sold or leased.
