Menomonie board maps 300 new trees to Wisconsin DNR Trillion Trees; forester reports three losses after storms

City Forester Derek Kahl told the Menomonie Urban Forestry Board on June 17 that spring tree planting was completed in May and that recent storms damaged some newly planted trees. Forester Kahl reported "only three trees did not survive: two in North Menomonie and one in Phelan Park."
Chair Liz Usborne demonstrated the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Trillion Trees website and reported she was able to add the 300 trees recently planted in Phelan Park to the state map, along with plantings from the previous Arbor Day and Legacy Tree locations. The board discussed possibly inviting a guest speaker to provide more information about the DNR’s ten-year Trillion Trees initiative.
Board members also reviewed a set of parking-lot items related to urban forestry priorities, including exploring carbon credits for city-owned tree assets, developing a forestry education program in partnership with the library and Rassbach Museum, reviewing the landscape ordinance with Public Works, and planning Main Street tree management that accounts for community attachment to mature maples.
Forester Kahl’s update and the DNR mapping are administrative items; the board did not take additional formal action beyond discussion and scheduling related agenda items for future meetings.
