Trustees and administrators at the Boresight Public School meeting pressed for a clearer and faster process to ensure volunteer coaches complete background and National Federation of State High School (NFHS) requirements before being placed in roles with student contact.
During discussion about volunteer hires, Elementary principal (S4) said the district needs to make sure volunteers “have to do the background check” and noted practical timing: “it takes 2 to sometimes 3 weeks to get those processed.” The principal said a checklist has been prepared to help managers get volunteers through preseason clearance before practices begin.
Why it matters: Trustees emphasized protecting students by preventing volunteers from being unsupervised with students until district checks are complete. Presenter (S6) reiterated that NFHS requirements must be satisfied for both paid and volunteer coaches.
Board direction: Trustees agreed the head coach should be hired before volunteers are finalized so alignment and supervision expectations are clear, and administrators said they will tighten the volunteer intake process so fingerprints and NFHS completions are obtained earlier. The board approved the volunteer coaches list subject to those conditions.
What remains open: Administrators will implement the checklist and coordinate with human resources and athletics staff to verify volunteers’ clearance before unsupervised interactions with students.
