Students to speak at Forsyth High School graduation after board approval

District staff told trustees the senior class voted to invite a keynote speaker and to add two student speakers; the students then told the board they planned a roughly five-minute address focused on class unity and school pride. “As members of the senior class of Forsyth High School, we are here to express our heartfelt interest in delivering a speech at our upcoming graduation ceremony,” the student presenters said, describing how the speech would reflect the class’s experiences and include a section honoring valedictorian Marissa and salutatorian Katie.
Board members asked whether the additional speech would lengthen the ceremony or detract from the valedictorian and salutatorian remarks. One trustee said the board should “be able to speak” and supported the students, while another warned of a slippery slope if more student speakers are added. The students responded that their address is intended to represent the whole class rather than spotlight the two individuals and that the joint format would keep it brief.
A motion to approve the student speakers was moved, seconded and carried. Trustees congratulated the students and wished them luck at graduation.
