Neesee McCormack, introduced by the council, said she grew up in Weber County and that visibility matters to LGBTQ youth. "Recognition matters. Visibility matters," she said, describing messages she receives from LGBTQ youth who feel less alone when they see openly queer, happy and successful people in Utah.
McCormack recounted researching more than 40 pieces of anti-LGBTQ legislation proposed in the state over the past five years and argued that local recognition sends a countervailing message of belonging. She invited council and residents to attend local Pride events and emphasized allyship as an active practice: "Allyship is correcting misinformation when we hear it. It is teaching our children about kindness... It is volunteering our time and resources to support organizations, leaders, and community members who uplift others." The council thanked McCormack for her remarks and for attending the meeting.
